Overview: Join us for a discussion with Adam Magers, MA, LCPC
Participants: This unique program is designed for behavioral health service providers who currently support veterans, and also those who would like to start.
Adam wrote the book, Odysseus & the Oar: Healing After War and Military Service (2024) which serves as a guide for veterans, their loved ones, and those who counsel them.
In his book, Adam applies the myth of the Odyssey by Homer to the experiences of war veterans. He describes this as the ‘archetype of the warrior’s return’ and shares the ways this timeless story can illuminate paths through the pain of homecoming, in order to offer veterans a new perspective on the journey they have undergone during their service.
The style of support he finds useful, both as a mental health therapist and as a veteran himself, is the meaning-making approach of depth psychology.
His approach goes beyond traditional treatment modalities that often further isolate veterans by treating their experiences as something inaccessible to anyone outside the arena of war. Instead, Adam offers behavioral health specialists the ability to see the stories of veterans in ways that display their commonality with all humans, which has the benefit of enhancing rapport and increasing the confidence that there are possibilities for lasting transformation.
Participants will increase their competence in the treatment of veterans, which will also increase their confidence.
